I think, at least one of my kids has thrown up on every single flight we have ever taken. At one point, when planning for a transatlantic, I considered a full travel ensemble from the waterproof offerings of the LL BEAN catalogue. I have a strong admiration (ok I’ll admit, sometimes combined with a tiny bit of envy) for those Moms who step on to the aircraft with perfectly coiffed hair, manicured fingernails, cashmere cardigans, neatly ironed skirts and lovely silky scarves. Last time I wore a scarf, my son blew his nose with it! These days the only things around my neck are my own hands. So how do these perfectly put-together Mothers do it? What is their secret? I decided to ask other women. Some suggested, rather scathingly, that the use of “Mom’s special vitamin water” might have been involved; others said, “denial” but I think they may have been referring to me; a few felt certain that I had not observed the Nanny walking behind the children. Maybe I needed to do a better sampling for my research, but the responses all seemed to indicate what I had already suspected. This type of style can only be achieved with a better attitude and a level of organization that may defy me until my children are in college. It’s all good, my glass is very full!
